INEX - Ireland's Internet neutral exchange
INEX provides a neutral connectivity platform between internet
service providers (ISPs) and content providers. It is a not
for profit company owned by its members - the service providers that use
its facilities.
Members include eircom.net, BT, C&W, NTL, COLT, SmartTelecom,
Strencom, HEAnet, Digiweb, NETsource, Irish Broadband, Hosting365,
MagnetNetowrks and Clearwire.
INEX has two switching centres which are interconnected by dedicated
resiliant fibre links.
INEX has recently received Irish Government support to enable it to
service a global market and the company is inviting membership from
carriers, ISPs and content providers across Europe and internationally.
Membership costs €2,000 a year, plus an
additional port charge that ranges from €5,000 for a 100 Mbps connection
to €9,000 for a 1Gb per second link.
Ireland hosts international operations of
Google, Overture, Yahoo!, eBay, Paypal and Microsoft, among others. The
country enjoys the lowest cost international telecommunications
connectivity of any OECD country. Ireland has multiple
direct fibre connections with the USA, Canada, Asia, Continental Europe,
and Britain via Hibernian Atlantic and Global Crossing facilities, among
others.
